Vladimir Mikhaylovich Tikhomirov graduated from the faculty of mechanics and mathematics of MSU in 1957. He defended his Ph.D. thesis "Widths of the sets in function spaces" in 1960 and started working in MSU as an assistant. In 1970 he defended his doctoral thesis "On approximation theory". Since 1975 he has been a professor at MSU, and he was the head of the GCP department from 1989 till 2011. In 2001 he was given status of emeritus professor of MSU. He is a memeber of Moscow Mathematical Society and Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. He is also a member of editorial boards of journals "Matematicheskii sbornik", "Journal of Approximation Theory", "Russian Mathematical Surveys", "Problems of Information Transmission", "Kvant".
